Just a Blip

Just a Blip

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12

Even when we grace this world for a few decades, it’s a blip on the screen of history.

Between the beginning and the end, what are you allowing? What are you choosing to do?

You might argue much of life is not our choosing. And I would agree.

Because of the fall of all humanity, we must work the land by the sweat of our brow.

We must labor every day for our food, shelter, and warmth.

But we can do all that and more with thankfulness on our lips. Or we can mumble and complain. It’s up to us.

Again, I ask, what are you choosing to do with your moments walking this earth?

Are you walking in bitterness or are you choosing to forgive?

Are you bowing to fear or are you choosing to trust God in all things?

Are you living from your selfish whims or are you choosing to humbly serve?

I’m guessing we all have bits of both, yes? However, when left unchecked, usually one side, our flesh, tends to dominate. And we follow right along. Like sheep. And sheep, I’m told, are dumb.

But here’s the good news: sheep who stay close to the Shepherd do just fine. As long as you continuously choose to live from God’s plan, not yours.

Do you live from power or serve as Jesus?

Do you breed contempt when wronged or bless those who persecute you?

Do you cling to harmful addictions or seek to honor God with your habits?

While there is breath in our lungs, let us praise the Lord.

While there is blood in our veins, let us thank God for His mercy.

While there are yearnings in our soul, let us yield ourselves to Him.

While there is a spring in our step, let us walk the way God chooses.

And let us bless the Lord with all our hearts. Amen.

Today, pick one: bitterness, fear, or selfishness. Hand it to God and choose the other side. That’s how we number our days, one at a time.

  • Genesis 3:19: “By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground...”
  • James 4:14: “What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”
  • Romans 12:14: “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.”
  • Psalm 146:2: “I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.”
  • Psalm 150:6: “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.”
